A Mixed Bag within
Optoelectronics and Application Specific Analog in 2005
January 9, 2006 –
Saratoga, CA – Worldwide Revenues of the Optoelectronics segment grew
+10% in 2005 over 2004, and Unit sales grew 16%. They exhibited higher
growth than the overall IC industry (8% for both Revenues and Units).
However, that +10% is a result of combining heterogeneous product lines,
whose performances ranged from a decline of 24% to growth of +70%,
according to Advanced Forecasting, a Silicon Valley forecasting firm.
In a
press release dated 1/3/06, Advanced Forecasting published that
Revenues of Optoelectronics for Display Units increased 70% while
their Unit sales increased +61%, indicating improving average selling
price (ASP) which have been hovering above $2 since June 2005. Upon
further analysis, the Laser Pickup product line has declined 24% in both
Units and Revenues. The ASP of these devices, used mainly for optical
disk drives, has been eroding continuously since April 2005, from $1.40
to $1.11. Both Displays and Laser Pickups retain similar market share
within the Optoelectronics segment (annual revenues of $0.8B and $1B,
respectively, out of a total of $15B).
The Application
Specific Analog, a $20B/year IC segment, included a top winner as well
as a loser. Unit sales for Computer and Peripheral applications grew
+45% and Revenues +24%. Conversely, Revenues for Consumer applications
declined 14% though Units grew 9%, influenced heavily by the segment’s
market share leader, Audio/Video applications. While Revenues of the AS
Analog Communication segment increased in line with the overall IC
industry at 8%, its Cellular Phone component (making up about 70% of the
segment) declined 0.5% in Revenues and was up 2% in Units, while other
Communication components increased at significantly higher rates. The AS
Analog Automotive segment declined in both Revenues (4%) and Units (2%).
On the whole, the
number of losing segments in 2005 was relatively small, reflective of
the overall increase in worldwide ICs in both Revenues and Units.
