Optoelectronics and
Application Specific ICs - the Leading Drivers in 2005
January 3, 2006 –
Saratoga, CA – While 2005 was a lukewarm year for Total ICs, yielding
about 8% growth in worldwide revenues and units, Optoelectronics and
Application Specific ICs performed significantly better per the analyses
of Advanced Forecasting, a Silicon Valley forecasting and market
research group.
Optoelectronics/Displays gained 70% in revenues and 61% in units,
reaching annual levels of $800M and over 400M units. Consumption ($) in
Japan grew 96%; Europe gained 15% while the Americas and Asia-Pacific
lost 8% and 11%, respectively.
Total Application
Specific ICs (including Application Specific Analog, Special purpose
Logic, etc.) worldwide sales increased 29% over the previous year to an
annual rate close to $90B, while units grew 18% to over 40B/year. Note
that Total Application Specific ICs constitute approximately 46% and 37%
of Total ICs revenues and units, respectively. Regionally, the Americas
were the leader at 48% growth in Application Specific ICs revenues for
the first 11 months of 2005; Asia-Pacific increased 31%, Japan at 28%
and Europe a modest 12%.
Asia-Pacific
maintains majority market share of consumption of Application Specific
ICs at 50% after increasing it share 5% in the last nine months. The
Americas also increased its market share from 14% to 17% since January
2005 at the expense of both Europe and Japan, each losing 2% and 4%,
respectively.
Noteworthy is that
Asia-Pacific’s performance since 2002 has been the mirror image of
Europe in terms of market share and trend line. As one gains market
share, the other loses market share with near perfect timing. The same
can be said on a less pronounced scale for the Americas and Japan,
although both shared a declining trend line.

Conversely, within
Worldwide Application Specific ICs, each of the major application
segments has stable market shares. The Communication segment retains
majority market share, a position its’ held since late 2002, hovering
around 33%. The Computer and Peripherals segment maintains a steady 25%
market share, while Consumer oscillates around 17% and Automotive at
10%.
